16.11.2010The use of GS1 Company Prefix
The purpose of the GS1 organization is to develop and manage different standards to facilitate supply chain transactions. GS1 Finland Oy is a part of the global GS1 organization. It is the only authority entitled to grant GS1 Company Prefixes in Finland.
GS1 Company Prefixes can be used worldwide in many different GS1 Identification Keys to identify, for example, goods, things and deliveries. The most common use for GS1 Company Prefix is a GTIN product number (formerly, an EAN code), which identifies products. With a GS1 Company Prefix, one can also form GLN numbers (Global Location Number), which can be used to identify physical locations and legal entities where is a need to retrieve pre-defined information to improve the efficiency of communication with the supply-chain. The SSCC is the GS1 Identification Key for an item of any composition established for transport and/or storage which needs to be managed through the supply chain.
In Finland, less used GS1 identifiers and their numbers are the following: the Global Returnable Asset Identifier (GRAI), the Global Individual Asset Identifier (GIAI), the Global Shipment Identification Number (GSIN), the Global Identification Number for Consignment (GINC), the Global Service Relation Number (GSRN) and the Global Document Type Identifier (GDTI).
More information about GS1 standards and use of GS1 Identifier Keys can be found from the GS1 Finland's website and customer service.
