Additional efficiency through the utilization of the GLN – Global Location Number

The Global Location Number (GLN) is one of the nine GS1 identification keys which a GS1 member company may freely form with company prefix. The GLN is a party identifier, which is suitable for all sectors. The GLN can identify a company, its internal operations or offices. In practice, when utilizing the GLN one can identify the company itself or a certain point in the supply chain such as a factory, warehouse, billing department or a single room.

Effective international business requires common party standards for which GLN provides a globally operational solution. It must be remembered that each separate internal identification key based on trade agreements between companies is an additional cost. The use of GLN increases operational efficiency, e.g. by making cross-tabulation of internal party identifiers unnecessary.

GLNs are globally used e.g. in electronic messages to identify different parties in business transactions, e.g. in order, delivery and invoice processes. GLN is an essential part of the EPC system, but it can also be used in pallet labels where it can identify supply chain parties and roles.

GS1 Finland recommends the use of the GLN as a standard party identifier. For GLN utilization issues, you may contact GS1 Finland's customer service and we will be happy to answer your questions.
